Hearing Science Laboratory / Yuri Suzuki

Leave it to Yuri Suzuki to develop a performance capitalizing on the unique sonic properties of the Starkey Laboratories Hearing Science Laboratory HSL II Synthesizer. Developed in 1979, Starkey’s modular synthesizer is a scientific instrument that was never intended for musical creation, and instead developed for testing purposes. Repurposing this vintage idiosyncratic oddity towards playful ends, Hearing Science Laboratory will explore – from 20 Hz to 20 kHz – the full range of human hearing and the conventions of electronic music performance.
