Two dozen drones float upwards with their engines whirring, each bearing a flashing LED sphere; the house lights come up and reveal a trio of dancers at the base of the formation and an aerial ballet ensues. 24 Drones combines the talents of twenty-four small drones and five human dancers. The drones utilize machine learning to maintain safe distances and to avoid collisions, resulting in a beautiful spatial composition. They fly in formation in conjunction with the motion of the dancers, yielding complex choreographies that are both organic and algorithmic – human-computer interaction in the truest and most poetic sense possible.
