ACT Center is part of Asia Culture Center (ACC) administered by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The ACC, the main facility of Gwangju as Hub City of Asian Culture Project, is one of the major cultural initiatives in the history of Korea.
Located on the site of the old provincial government building of Jeollanam-do, a space that symbolizes the May 18 Democratic Uprising in Gwangju, has been reborn as Asia Culture Center, a venue to promote creativity and exchange in the culture and arts of contemporary Asia, as well as a place for visitors to experience the unique and diverse cultural offerings of Asia. Operating under Asia Culture Center are ACC Culture Exchange, ACC Archive & Research, ACC Creation, ACC Theater, and ACC Children, institutions that perform independent functions while serving as part of a fluid, integrative system, thus demonstrating the diversity and vitality of Asia culture while connecting Asia with the international community.
Gwangju:the City of Light : Gwang (광, Chinese letter: 光) means “light” and Ju (주, Chinese letter: 州) means “province.” Areas of scenery along the outskirts of the city gave birth to gasa, a form of Korean classical poetry. Located in the center of the agricultural Jeolla region, the city is also famous for its rich and diverse cuisine.
With a population of 1.5 million, Gwangju Metropolitan City, one of the six largest cities in Korea, is the birthplace of a modern democratic movement in Korea. The history of civil resistance is well portrayed and preserved at the Square of Democracy, established in commemoration of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, and the National Cemetery. More info
